WA State 16s Yarran awarded Kevin Sheehan Medal
CHRIS Yarran of Western Australia’s Brownes Chill AFL State 16s has been awarded the Kevin Sheehan Medal for Best Developing Talent at the NAB AFL National 16s Championships.
"Chris has demonstrated a thirst for leadership and has matured over the Brownes Chill State Academy program to produce some outstanding and exciting moments of football,” said WAFC High Performance Coordinator Raff Guadagnino.
In the final round of the Championships at Blacktown Olympic Park, Yarran booted an amazing seven goals, wrapping up a brilliant carnival performance.
“It means a lot to me, it feels great,” Yarran said of winning the medal. “When Raff first told me, I was really surprised. I couldn’t have done it by myself, the team helped me.”
Yarran, from Perth Demons, said the highlight of the carnival was getting to play as part of a great State team.
“The best part was probably just hanging out with the team, getting to know them and having fun. They’re all good boys,” he said.
At this stage Yarran will continue playing for Perth Demons and in PSA football for Trinity College.
WA’s Corey Chalmers also stood out and was awarded the NAB AFL Most Valuable Player for his efforts in midfield, where he averaged two goals and 25 possessions per game.
Guadagnino believes Chalmers is a rising star of the future.
"Corey is a hard working team player who has sacrificed his game to benefit the team goals. Corey is a quiet player who leads by his actions," he said.
