AFL Umpire Dean Margetts will spend his weekend break during the AFL split-round umpiring a game of Under 17s football in the Demons District.
Dean originally began umpiring with the Demons District Football Umpires Association (DDFUA) and will return to grass-roots football as part of the District’s contribution to the 'Umpiring is Everyone’s Business' campaign.
The campaign highlights that umpiring is a shared responsibility, encouraging all participants to have a role in creating positive match day environments.
Dean's decision to officiate at a junior game in his former local league demonstrates the AFL’s commitment to grass-roots football and local football’s obligation to ensuring that umpiring is a respected part of the game.
DDFUA President Daniel Gibbons said that the local community was proud of Dean’s achievements in the AFL and his commitment to his original umpiring group.
"Dean's generous decision to return to WA during the split round is a unique event that will promote umpiring in our district but also give everyone involved the opportunity to showcase junior football," he said.
“Our district has taken some strong steps over the past few years to ensure that junior football is played in an environment that is safe and enjoyable for all involved. We're delighted to have Dean coming home to be a part of that.”
Dean will be joining the DDFUA field, boundary and goal umpires in umpiring the match between Gosnells and Kenwick on June 27th, 2.30PM at Sutherlands C, Gosnells.
