Round 14, Perth v Subiaco

Medibank Stadium

Saturday, 26 June 2010

Perth                     6.3       8.5             13.7           14.10           94

Subiaco                3.2       7.6             9.12            14.15          99

A gallant Perth side did just about everything right but win an exciting match at Medibank Stadium on Saturday as they went down to the Lions by 5 points. In a match they led for most of the day Subiaco stormed home in the desperate last quarter with Perth’s best player Ross Young missing a shot at goal with the last kick of the day.

In perfect conditions for football Perth Captain Steven Armstrong won the toss and kicked to the city end of the ground.

Perth started well early and with Will Sullivan winning some early tap outs they enjoyed plenty of height around the ground with Andrew McDougall starting on a wing and Michael Johnson at Centre Half Forward.

It was Subiaco though that were the first side on the scoreboard through Full Forward Marc Re. The Phoenix Demons were certainly working hard and McDougall snapped a good goal to level the scores early on.

Perth was receiving excellent drive from Tendai Mzungu and Scott Siekierka and largely through their good work in the midfield Perth kicked successive goals through Young, who started well in a forward pocket.

Margetts To Umpire Local Under 17's Game

Email Print PDF

AFL Umpire Dean Margetts will spend his weekend break during the AFL split-round umpiring a game of Under 17s football in the Demons District.

Dean originally began umpiring with the Demons District Football Umpires Association (DDFUA) and will return to grass-roots football as part of the District’s contribution to the 'Umpiring is Everyone’s Business' campaign.

The campaign highlights that umpiring is a shared responsibility, encouraging all participants to have a role in creating positive match day environments.

Dean's decision to officiate at a junior game in his former local league demonstrates the AFL’s commitment to grass-roots football and local football’s obligation to ensuring that umpiring is a respected part of the game.

DDFUA President Daniel Gibbons said that the local community was proud of Dean’s achievements in the AFL and his commitment to his original umpiring group.

"Dean's generous decision to return to WA during the split round is a unique event that will promote umpiring in our district but also give everyone involved the opportunity to showcase junior football," he said.

“Our district has taken some strong steps over the past few years to ensure that junior football is played in an environment that is safe and enjoyable for all involved. We're delighted to have Dean coming home to be a part of that.”

Dean will be joining the DDFUA field, boundary and goal umpires in umpiring the match between Gosnells and Kenwick on June 27th, 2.30PM at Sutherlands C, Gosnells.

Round 12, Perth v South Fremantle

Wogan Hills Oval

Sunday, 13 June 2010

Perth                              4.1           5.1              9.5             10.5            65

South Fremantle          4.1           9.10            11.12           17.19          121

South Fremantle accounted for Perth in front of a healthy country crowd at Wogan Hills on Sunday.

In fine conditions Perth won the toss through Captain Steven Armstrong and kicked with the use of a strong 4 goal breeze.

The match was only a couple of minutes old when the Bulldogs slotted a goal through talented wingman Nathan Phillips. South was certainly the better side in the opening minutes as Perth despite coming off a big win seemed slow to settle.

With 2 quick goals on the board South were looking dangerous and rebounding well out of defence especially through Toby Bairstow. Perth brought up their first major at the 4 minute mark through Justin Bollenhagen.

As the match progressed the Phoenix Demons improved their ball handling as Tendai Mzungu and Siekierka were showing some real pace around the ground. A second goal resulted from some good work from Joel Houghton and when Matthew Ferguson pulled down a big grab and converted from the goal square Perth was back in the match.

At quarter time scores were level at 4 goals 1 a piece, however the concern from a Perth view was have they done enough with the use of such a strong breeze.

The second term started with South peppering the goals as they kicked long and direct. Their big key AFL forwards in Callum Wilson and Ryan Murphy were causing plenty of headaches for an overworked Perth defence as the Bulldogs slammed on 3 goals in 10 minutes.

Phillips along with Bairstow and the Eagles Ashton Hams were roaming far and wide as South Fremantle really started to put some scoreboard pressure between them and their opponents.
